Determining the toxicity of the biomass of Cladophora sp.

Finding new or alternative feeds, feed additives, and raw materials safe for health and the environment is significant in intensifying livestock production. At the same time, the fodder base obtained from aquatic ecosystems – algae – deserves special attention. The advantage of using algae as fodder is using small areas for their cultivation and a high reproduction rate. In addition, algae are grown where other plants cannot grow, and the productivity of algae is several times higher than that of higher plants. Algae can produce beneficial compounds and biomass, which are also used to increase the nutritional value of food products. Biomass obtained from algae is a source of necessary vitamins, minerals, proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, and other necessary nutrients. The composition of algae depends on the environment from which this biomass is collected, the conditions of algae cultivation, the season, the species of algae, and many other factors. In addition, it should be noted that some algae, out of the total amount, are toxic when consumed. That is why it is essential to research their toxicity. The article presents the results of studying the toxicity of the biomass of Cladophora sp. on the body of guppy fish. When studying the effect of biomass Cladophora sp. on the body of guppy fish, it was established that its use for 96 hours in doses of 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 mg/l did not cause their death, and its LC50 is higher than 100 mg/l. In addition, no changes were detected in the behavior of the fish; they were active, mobile, and actively responding to external stimuli. The fish of the experimental groups were not distinguished from those of the control group.

The emergence and diversification of a zoonotic pathogen from within the microbiota of intensively farmed pigs.

The expansion and intensification of livestock production is predicted to promote the emergence of pathogens. As pathogens sometimes jump between species, this can affect the health of humans as well as livestock. Here, we investigate how livestock microbiota can act as a source of these emerging pathogens through analysis of Streptococcus suis, a ubiquitous component of the respiratory microbiota of pigs that is also a major cause of disease on pig farms and an important zoonotic pathogen. Combining molecular dating, phylogeography, and comparative genomic analyses of a large collection of isolates, we find that several pathogenic lineages of S. suis emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries, during an early period of growth in pig farming. These lineages have since spread between countries and continents, mirroring trade in live pigs. They are distinguished by the presence of three genomic islands with putative roles in metabolism and cell adhesion, and an ongoing reduction in genome size, which may reflect their recent shift to a more pathogenic ecology. Reconstructions of the evolutionary histories of these islands reveal constraints on pathogen emergence that could inform control strategies, with pathogenic lineages consistently emerging from one subpopulation of S. suis and acquiring genes through horizontal transfer from other pathogenic lineages. These results shed light on the capacity of the microbiota to rapidly evolve to exploit changes in their host population and suggest that the impact of changes in farming on the pathogenicity and zoonotic potential of S. suis is yet to be fully realized.

Circulation of nutrients through bio-based fertilizer products: perspectives from farmers, suppliers, and civil society

Closing nutrient cycles by bio-based fertilizer products (BFPs) can improve the environmental sustainability of food systems and facilitate a more circular economy. Although the theoretical potential for nutrient recycling has been explored in detail, BFPs still seldom replace mineral fertilizer products in practice. The aim of the present study was to explore the critical enabling and limiting factors for the use of BFPs as seen from the perspective of farmers, suppliers, and civil society. To this aim, qualitative interviews were conducted with seven conventional grain farmers, six suppliers of BFPs, and five representatives of civil society, limited to environmental non-governmental organizations. The presented results illustrate a mismatch between demand and supply. On the one hand, the interviewed farmers were only interested in using BFPs if they are practical to use, balanced with respect to nutrient contents, and potentially provide the same earnings as mineral fertilizers. Positive effects for soil quality were an important driver for many of the farmers. On the other hand, the suppliers of BFPs were generally not able to offer products that fulfilled the farmers’ demands without economic losses, and they emphasized that they have faced several regulatory challenges. Representatives of regional civil society organizations expressed concern that new technical solutions could cause new environmental challenges, and that BFPs could enable further intensification of livestock production. The central-level representatives from the same NGOs, however, were positive about that BFPs can solve environmental problems. Policy instruments will be needed to increase the adoption of PFPs. Fostering BFPs’ that contribute to a sustainable agriculture is important to consider when formulating these polices.

The content of mineral nitrogen in a 0-30 cm soil layer as an indicator of ecosystem services: А case study of grasslands

Nitrogen’s role in agriculture lies in its mineral form, impacting plant availability and potential losses, with soil nitrogen content in grassy areas playing a vital role in ecosystem services like regulation and maintenance. The research aimed to evaluate these services using the mineral nitrogen indicator in the 0-30 cm soil layer, and to establish the link between their biophysical and financial values. This was done considering usage type, soil type, and corn as an alternative feed for ruminants. Services were assessed across 1,540 points in permanent green areas (meadows, pastures, alternating), grass cultivation areas (short-term), and corn fields. The study affirmed the significant contribution of grasslands to ecosystem services, evaluated through the “content of Nmin in a 0-30 cm” soil layer, which exhibited variations based on usage, type, and regional distinctions. The highest biophysical and monetary values of ecosystem services were found in grasslands designated for meadow use, while the lowest accumulation of Nmin in the 0-30 cm layer, thus impacting the scope of environmental services was observed in mineral soils subjected to short-term alternating crop cultivation (55.2 kg⸱ha-1) and corn cultivation (70.9 kg⸱ha-1). Across various usage methods and soil types, the region characterized by intensified livestock production, the Podlaskie Province displayed the highest biophysical and monetary values for grassland ecosystem services compared to the other provinces under study. In contrast, the remaining provinces exhibited comparatively lower values in this regard. The provided monetary value, based on current nitrogen fertilizer costs and grassland/corn extent, can universally gauge ecosystem service worth from fodder plants across farms, regions, and nations

Evaluation of the Effects of Melatonin Implants on Testicular and Spermatic Parameters of Rams Raised in Station in the Niayes Zone in Senegal

The intensification of livestock production in response to the growing demand for animal products is increasingly creating new challenges in terms of control of livestock management and feeding, and especially reproduction. Also, ewes are often considered responsible for infertility problems in a sheep flock, as the reproductive capacity of rams is often taken for granted. However, it is important to have genetically superior males to improve the overall fertility of the herd. And, one way to control the sexual performance of rams and improve their fertilizing capacity, is to have them undergo melatonin treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of melatonin implants on testicular and spermatic parameters of rams raised in stations in the Niayes area of Senegal. The experimental herd consisted of 6 rams of well-known body characteristics which were followed for 2 months during which testicular measurements were carried out at the beginning and semen was collected by electroejaculation every 2 weeks. After a break of 2 weeks, the same rams are implanted with melatonin (MELOVINE ®) at a rate of 3 implants/ram, i.e. a dose of 54 mg of melatonin per ram, and the same measurements and semen collections are again carried out for 2 months. Data on antero-posterior testicular diameter, testicular weight, scrotal circumference, and semen analysis (volume, color, appearance, mass and individual motility, concentration, morphology) recorded and processed with Excel were exported to the SPSS software where they were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and independent sample comparison testing. The results showed that melatonin treatment significantly reduced weight (555±155 g vs. 396±128 g) and antero-posterior diameter (23.42±2.0 cm vs. 20.10±2.26 cm). However, it induced improvements in ejaculate volume, color, and appearance, sperm production, and morphological abnormality rate, and, most significantly, sperm motility (2.1±1.5 vs. 3.3±1.2) and survival rate (54±34% vs. 80±31%) of spermatozoa. Melatonin has therefore improved the sperm characteristics of rams, and is an interesting reproductive management tool for improving the productivity of sheep farms. It can be recommended for use in artificial insemination centres in order to improve the characteristics of the semen doses produced.

Antibiotic resistance genes of public health importance in livestock and humans in an informal urban community in Nepal

Efforts to mitigate the increasing emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will benefit from a One Health perspective, as over half of animal antimicrobials are also considered medically important in humans, and AMR can be maintained in the environment. This is especially pertinent to low- and middle-income countries and in community settings, where an estimated 80% of all antibiotics are used. This study features AMR genes found among humans, animals, and water at an urban informal settlement in Nepal with intensifying livestock production. We sampled humans, chickens, ducks, swine, and water clustered by household, as well as rodents and shrews near dwellings, concurrently in time in July 2017 in southeastern Kathmandu along the Manohara river. Real-time qualitative PCR was performed to screen for 88 genes. Our results characterize the animal-human-environmental interfaces related to the occurrence of specific resistance genes (blaSHV-1 (SHV(238G240E) strain), QnrS, ermC, tetA, tetB, aacC2, aadA1) associated with antibiotics of global health importance that comprise several drug classes, including aminoglycosides, beta-lactams, tetracyclines, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones. By characterizing risk factors across AMR genes of public health importance, this research highlights potential transmission pathways for further investigation and provides prioritization of community-based prevention and intervention efforts for disrupting AMR transmission of critically important antibiotics used in both humans and animals in Nepal.

Requirement, Dietary Sources, and Efficiency of Absorption of Major Minerals by Farm Animals: From an Educational Perspective

The necessity of the inclusion of major minerals in the diet of farm animals cannot be overemphasized. The production of the much-needed animal protein can be severely hampered when unrecognized conditions of deficiency, oversupply, or in-balance of minerals exist and interfere with the intensification of livestock production. Here, the purpose of this study was to explain this matter based on an educational perspective. This paper is a literature survey. This paper is important to make farmers understand the requirement, dietary sources, and efficiency of absorption of major minerals by farm animals. For the best production of any livestock, the requirement for each mineral must be known. Lack of adequate minerals in the diet of farm animals is associated with late maturity, prolonged breeding period, reproductive disorders, poor growth, anemia, and a high rate of mortality.

Debating animal agriculture in contemporary India: Ethics, politics, ecologies

This paper investigates social science literatures and public discourse on animal-based food systems in India to examine how social, ecological, and animal justice concerns are addressed (or not). The Indian livestock sector is estimated to be the largest in the world, with significant implications for local and planetary natures and the individual animals that compose the sector. The intensification of livestock production in India has unfolded alongside serious, often violent, sectarian conflicts around meat and cow protection. In this paper, I discuss how scholarly and public debates have been centred on the cultural roots of vegetarianism, the right-wing contours of political bans on cow slaughter, beef, and eggs, while issues relating to the more-than-human impacts of animal agriculture have remained marginal. The paper brings these analyses together with an examination of the intensification of animal agriculture in the country, and the consequent animal, ecological, and social vulnerabilities. Through this multi-optic account of animalbased food systems in India, I argue that the single-optic focus on cows, consumption (of meat) and related identity politics has produced serious lacunae in scholarship and public debate in the form of the overlooking of the multiple, intersecting impacts of commercial livestock farming on social, ecological, and animal wellbeing. In the backdrop of global worry about animal agriculture, the paper inspects the role of the social sciences in creating possibilities for considered engagement with the plural justice implications of India’s rapidly intensifying livestock landscapes.

Advanced composting technologies promotes environmental benefits and eco-efficiency: A life cycle assessment

Growing demand for intensive animal farms and increased public awareness of environmental friendliness, have led to continuous iteration and refinement of the initially crude composting technology. However, the impact of the composting facility and energy input on eco-efficiency is limited. In this study, a LCA approach was conducted to investigate the eco-efficiency of four widely applied composting strategies: static heaps (SH), windrow composting (WC), membrane-covered composting (MC) and reactor composting (RC). The results showed that the environmental benefits of RC's were decreased by 11.3%, 21.7%, and 6.5% compared to SH, WC, and MC, respectively. Advanced composting technologies didn’t substantially reduce direct economic costs, however, the eco-efficiency of RC was increased by 296.9%, 54.7%, and 87.6% compared to SH, WC, and MC, respectively. Overall, the results demonstrate that RC is a promising solution with high ecological efficiency that can contribute to the sustainable development of intensified livestock production.

Risk Reduction and Productivity Increase Through Integrating Arachis pintoi in Cattle Production Systems in the Colombian Orinoquía

In many parts of the foothills of the Orinoquía region of Colombia, cattle production takes place on poorly drained soils. The region is dominated by extensive grazing systems of Brachiaira humidicola cv. Humidicola, a grass with high adaptation potential under temporal waterlogging conditions. Inadequate management practices and low soil fertility result in degradation, however, with important negative effects on pasture productivity and the quality and provision of (soil) ecosystem services–a situation that is likely to worsen in the near future due to climate change. Against this background, AGROSAVIA (Corporación Colombiana de Investigación Agropecuaria) selected Arachis pintoi CIAT 22160 cv. Centauro (Centauro) as a promising alternative for the sustainable intensification of livestock production and rehabilitation of degraded areas. This study assesses dual-purpose milk production in the foothills of the Colombian Orinoquía from an economic perspective. We compare two production systems: the Centauro–Brachiaira humidicola cv. Humidicola association (new system) and Brachiaira humidicola cv. Humidicola as a monoculture (traditional system). We used cashflow and risk assessment models to estimate economic indicators. The projections for economic returns consider changes in forage characteristics under regional climate change scenarios RCP (2.6, 8.5). The LIFE-SIM model was used to simulate dairy production. Results show that the inclusion of Centauro has the potential to increase animal productivity and profitability under different market scenarios. The impact of climatic variables on forage production is considerable in both climate change scenarios. Both total area and potential distribution of Centauro could change, and biomass production could decline. Brachiaira humidicola cv. Humidicola showed better persistence due to higher nitrogen levels in soil when grown in association with Centauro. The legume also provides a number of ecosystem services, such as improving soil structure and composition, and also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This helps to improve the adaptation and mitigation capacity of the system.

Beyond the Mass Balance: Watershed Phosphorus Legacies and the Evolution of the Current Water Quality Policy Challenge

AbstractIncreased use of phosphorus (P) fertilizers and detergents and intensified livestock production have more than doubled P inputs to human‐impacted watersheds over pre‐industrial levels. While P fertilizer use and manure application help to maximize crop yields, excess P is lost to runoff, leading to eutrophication of downstream waters. Excess P also accumulates across the landscape, leading to legacies that serve as long‐term sources of P to surface waters, even after inputs to the watershed are reduced. Here, we have developed, for the first time, a process‐based model, Exploration of Long‐tErM Nutrient Trajectories‐Phosphorus, designed to capture legacy P accumulation and depletion trajectories along the land‐aquatic continuum. To drive the model, we have developed a more than 100‐year trajectory of watershed P inputs to the Grand River Watershed (GRW), Canada’s largest watershed draining directly to Lake Erie. Our results first show that net P inputs to the watershed approximately tripled between 1900 and the late‐1970s, when P surplus magnitudes peaked at approximately 15 kg ha−1 y−1. During this same period, stream P loads have increased more than fourfold, from 0.11 kg ha−1 y−1 in 1900 to 0.80 kg ha−1 y−1 in the 1970s. Since 1900, the GRW has served as a net P sink, with approximately 96% of net P inputs having been retained within the basin. Future simulations suggest that while 40% reductions in P loading in Lake Erie watersheds are possible under aggressive management scenarios, legacy P will continue to elevate P loads to Lake Erie for many decades to come.

Evaluation of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) for Estimating Soil Organic Matter and Phosphorus in Mediterranean Montado Ecosystem

The Montado is an agro-silvo-pastoral ecosystem characteristic of the Mediterranean region. Pasture productivity and, consequently, the possibilities for intensifying livestock production depend on soil fertility. Soil organic matter (SOM) and phosphorus (P2O5) are two indicators of the evolution of soil fertility in this ecosystem. However, their conventional analytical determination by reference laboratory methods is costly, time consuming, and laborious and, thus, does not meet the needs of current production systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate an alternative approach to estimate SOM and soil P2O5 based on near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with multivariate data analysis. For this purpose, 242 topsoil samples were collected in 2019 in eleven fields. These samples were subjected to reference laboratory analysis and NIRS analysis. For NIRS, 165 samples were used during the calibration phase and 77 samples were used during the external validation phase. The results of this study showed significant correlation between NIRS calibration models and reference methods for quantification of these soil parameters. The coefficient of determination (R2, 0.85 for SOM and 0.76 for P2O5) and the residual predictive deviation (RPD, 2.7 for SOM and 2.2 for P2O5) obtained in external validation indicated the potential of NIRS to estimate SOM and P2O5, which can facilitate farm managers’ decision making in terms of dynamic management of animal grazing and differential fertilizer application.

The nutritive value of different Mediterranean browse species used as animal feeds under oak silvopastoral systems in Northern Portugal

Oak woodlands (OW) have historically been important in the Mediterranean region since they provide an important amount of goods and services, such as fodder and shelter for extensive livestock production systems. However, OW lost relevance as a fodder supplier due to the specialization and intensification of livestock production. Nowadays, with the challenges emerging from climate change and other environmental concerns, OW are regaining interest as silvopastoral systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seasonal variation of the chemical composition and the in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of key browse species in grazed OW in the north of Portugal. Additionally, the feeding value was compared with the requirements of goats’ maintenance and late pregnancy. The browse species evaluated were Quercus suber, Q. rotundifolia, Q. faginea, Juniperus oxycedrus, Cytisus scoparius, C. multiflorus, Genista falcata, Cistus ladanifer, and Lavandula stoechas. The data were analysed by a two way analysis of variance focusing on species and season and their interaction. The results obtained varied significantly among the species studied regarding the crude protein content (CP) (41.6–195.9 g kg−1 dry matter (DM)), fibres (neutral detergent fibre (NDF): 316.7–632.5 g kg−1 DM; acid detergent fibre (ADF): 246.0–468.0 g kg−1DM; acid detergent lignin (ADL): 90–210.5 g kg−1 DM), IVOMD (33.02–71.34%), and metabolizable energy (ME) (5.78–11.42 MJ kg−1 DM). Both C. ladanifer and Q. rotundifolia have inadequate ME and CP levels to meet the nutritional needs of goats with 45 kg of live weight. Only leguminous shrubs cover CP needs in late pregnancy.

Meta-Analysis of Strategies to Reduce NH3 Emissions from Slurries in European Agriculture and Consequences for Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The intensification of livestock production, to accommodate rising human population, has led to a higher emission of ammonia into the environment. For the reduction of ammonia emissions, different management steps have been reported in most EU countries. Some authors, however, have criticized such individual measures, because attempts to abate the emission of ammonia may lead to significant increases in either methane, nitrous oxide, or carbon dioxide. In this study, we carried out a meta-analysis of experimental European data published in peer-reviewed journals to evaluate the impact of major agricultural management practices on ammonia emissions, including the pollution swapping effect. The result of our meta-analysis showed that for the treatment, storage, and application stages, only slurry acidification was effective for the reduction of ammonia emissions (−69%), and had no pollution swapping effect with other greenhouse gases, like nitrous oxide (−21%), methane (−86%), and carbon dioxide (−15%). All other management strategies, like biological treatment, separation strategies, different storage types, the concealing of the liquid slurry with different materials, and variable field applications were effective to varying degrees for the abatement of ammonia emission, but also resulted in the increased emission of at least one other greenhouse gas. The strategies focusing on the decrease of ammonia emissions neglected the consequences of the emissions of other greenhouse gases. We recommend a combination of treatment technologies, like acidification and soil incorporation, and/or embracing emerging technologies, such as microbial inhibitors and slow release fertilizers.

“Breaking Even” under Intensification? Gendered Trade‐Offs for Women Milk Marketers in Kenya*

AbstractDespite the commonly vaunted “win‐win” prospect of combining intensified livestock production with greater gender equality, the benefits of formal marketization of livestock products are generally skewed toward men. In response to this global trend, there is a growing impetus to better understand the gender dynamics underlying women's market participation to curtail the risk of worsening gender inequalities in agricultural systems transitioning to intensified production. This study analyzes the spectrum of women's informal milk market practices in two Kenyan Counties undergoing dairy system intensification. Qualitative data were gathered from dairy stakeholders and market traders to explore the localized system of gender relations mediating women's engagement with milk markets and current practices. Results indicate that increased dairy intensification and informal market use is challenging existing gender norms and disrupting the boundaries between hegemonic (socially acceptable) and pariah (socially disruptive) gender relations. While women are generally better able to control the proceeds from their dairy labor in informal markets, they also face high social culpability and danger from engaging in illicit activities that transgress local norms. These contradictory “win‐lose” dynamics and trade‐offs highlight the contested nature of gender market relations under agricultural intensification and commercialization currently being pursued under low emissions dairy development (LEDD) in Kenya. The risk of exacerbating existing gender inequalities has profound implications for LEDD and agricultural intensification more broadly.

Fibrolytic enzymes improving in vitro rumen degradability of tropical forages.

During specific times of the year, especially dry seasons, tropical forages typically have poor nutritional value due to high contents of neutral and acid detergent fibres, and low crude protein in their composition, which may reduce productivity of ruminant livestock production and lead to increased enteric methane (CH4 ) emissions per unit of generated product in forage-bases systems. In order to increase fibre degradability and the efficiency of energy utilisation from low-quality forages, exogenous fibrolytic enzymes have been studied. In this assay, we evaluated the effects of increasing dose levels of fibrolytic enzymes extract (FEE) produced by Trichoderma reesei on in vitro rumen organic matter degradability, fermentation parameters, total gas and CH4 production of tropical forages. Forage samples were analysed for their bromatological composition, and enzyme activity from FEE was performed for xylanase and endoglucanase. The in vitro gas production technique was used in a 5×3 factorial arrangement with five FEE dose levels (0, 5, 50, 500 and 5,000µl) and three substrates (Cynodon spp., Panicum maximum and Cenchrus ciliaris L.). The highest dose level of FEE increased degradability, total gas and CH4 production in all substrates (p<.05). Butyrate concentration also increased while acetate:propionate ratio and pH decreased with the addition of FEE (p<.05). These results indicated that the use of fibrolytic enzymes can be a reliable strategy to improve degradability of low-quality forages, contributing to the sustainability and intensification of livestock production in tropical countries.

Food waste declined more in rural Chinese households with livestock

The ongoing evolution of food waste trends and the intensification of livestock systems in developing economies play a critical role in shaping global sustainability. We explore the linkage between food waste and livestock systems at the household level and how this connection changed in China during the 1990s and 2000s when market liberalization was followed by policies that led to intensification of livestock production. We find the amount of food waste in all rural households declined significantly over this period. Households with livestock, which often use uneaten food for animal feed, created about 75% more food waste than other rural households at the beginning of this period, but experienced significantly greater reductions in food waste and significantly greater increases in animal protein consumption over the study period. We postulate that intensified livestock production led to less uneaten food being used as animal feed and, in response, led to more efficient household consumption including less discarded food. We reject the separability of household livestock production and consumption decisions prior to the onset of livestock intensification, but cannot not reject separability thereafter. We end by discussing the implications of livestock intensification for overall food system sustainability.

How dietary transition changed land use in Mexico.

The nutrition transition towards western diets in developing countries occurs at multiple levels, impacting health and society and also the environment. In Mexico, the shift in food consumption and production patterns, particularly in relation to animal source foods (ASF), has changed land use. We studied the consumption and production of ASF and change in agricultural land use in Mexico during the second half of the twentieth century and until 2013; using domestic and international data sources, our findings show an increasing proportion of farmed area devoted to the production of feed crops domestically, and also an increasing demand of farmed feed beyond national borders. We discuss how the intensification of livestock production is associated to major environmental threats and suggest that opportunities are available for sustainable and healthy food options.

Investing Sustainably in African Livestock Development: Opportunities and Trade-Offs

The production and consumption of animal source foods is central to the ongoing discussion of global food systems. The objectives of this report are first to describe the patterns and changing structures of the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) livestock sector and secondly to explore innovations that can help to address the complex trade-offs involved in investing in the development of a sustainable livestock sector. The report reviews trends in consumption, production and trade of major livestock commodities and feed in the four subregions of SSA and presents an overview of key issues facing the sector. A scenario for the SSA livestock sector in 2030 is developed using the IMPACT model. It shows significant growth of production across all major livestock commodities with poultry and pork growing faster than ruminant meat production. A series of technical and institutional innovations show opportunities to address the challenges of sustainably intensifying livestock production in SSA. They include improved forages, improved fodder conservation, artificial insemination combined with estrus synchronization, intensive beekeeping, livestock masterplans, livestock asset transfer programs, indexbased livestock insurance and livestock market information systems. The report concludes that livestock plays multiple key roles in the food systems in SSA and will continue to do so in the coming years. The complexity of the system and the multiple trade-offs imply a need for policy makers to shift from frequent “benign neglect” to actively invest in the analytical capacity to understand the changing roles and issues in SSA livestock development. In spite of important divergences on the future role, opportunities and risks associated with livestock production and consumption, developed economies and SSA nations will benefit from international scientific cooperation to jointly tackle the complex issues facing livestock production as part of the envisaged global food system.

The Livestock Sector in Colombia: Toward a Program to Facilitate Large-Scale Adoption of Mitigation and Adaptation Practices

Livestock raising is a very important sector in the Colombian economy; however, in the next decade, it will face some enormous challenges, including adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. Colombia must change drastically, and in a very short time, the model of livestock production, freeing up areas of pasture for other uses and intensifying livestock production in suitable zones. In spite of the urgency and the magnitude of the required changes, only isolated small-scale initiatives exist. Thus, Colombia has the challenge of the scaling up of measures, but, up to now, it has had no program designed to achieve this. Starting from an analysis of the policies, actors, and existing initiatives, we seek to understand the potentialities for and limitations to the scaling up of promising practices to face the challenges of climate change in the livestock sector in Colombia. We show the elements that have been key in previous initiatives regarding the spaces for scaling up: policy space, fiscal and financial space, institutional capacity space, learning space, partnership space, technical space, and other spaces, to which we add the importance of the technical dimension. Finally, we propose some elements for designing a national program of reconversion of livestock raising for the Colombian context.
